With the advent of the new year, Canon might surprise us with yet another groundbreaker entry in their prime lenses code-named RF 35mm f/1.2L USM, and honestly speaking, this thing is shaping up to be unlike any prime lens we’ve ever seen to this date for a whole host of reason.

The initial 2024 launch window and f/1.2 maximum aperture got folks riled up at Reddit and other social media platforms such as “X formerly known as Twitter. As its other specs have started leaking from various forums, it is believed that this lens sounds almost too good to be true, it’s all a matter of time before we get to know its official price tag.

Moreover, according to several patents filed in Japan, it may feature a whooping short 0.29mm back focus distance, it almost seems like the sensor would be pretty much sitting right beside the element, As impractical it may sound, it is indeed something Canon bringing to the table.

Aside from all the buzz it has racked up in subreddits such as r/Canon and r/photography, it has also left our lens experts quite baffled while they scratching their heads trying to comprehend the optical advancements needed to pull that off without compromising image quality.

One comment that caught quite our attention claimed “If Canon truly has what it takes to crack such a compact design while maintaining top-notch sharpness, it could revolutionize what’s possible in prime lens design history”

I have to admit, the bold claims certainly seem like something out of a fever dream but then again, there is no feat too big to accomplish considering the pace Canon has racked up at least in the past year.

But that’s still not even the most baffling element that has been making rounds on various photography forums that claim the RF 35mm f/1.2 will utilize some form of Canon’s experimental “Quad Pixel AF” technology for blazing fast, eye-popping accurate autofocus unlike anything before it which means, it would be about time we get our hands on something snappy that could be paired with an equally worthy Canon’s camera to match its power so shutterbugs and outdoor photographers could lock onto subjects in the split second they take a breath. In other words, you might as well be saying “Goodbye hunting, hello catching”

Here are unconfirmed reports on what you might be getting inside the box of Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM could possibly include:

  • Quad-Pixel Autofocus is being unveiled as rumored which means this would allow for blazing fast and accurate Autofocus capabilities like no other lens before. Moreover, Byonics Quad AF sensors would track subjects with almost predictive precision and accuracy.
  • Nanoscale Coatings would eliminate lens errors and provide correction at a whole new level. New nano-optical lens coatings crafted at the atomic level could eliminate any hint of ghosting or flaring even in extreme backlit scenes, which sounds game-changing.
  • Built-In ND and Graduated Filters: A truly innovative lens might allow built-in neutral density and graduated ND filters right in the hood. Video pros and editors would certainly have a field day with this aspect.
  • Dual-axis image stabilization is highly expected to be introduced in this lens, making long-range photography feel like a breeze.
  • Lens Customization Modes: Via a companion app and built-in chip, pros could tailor AF algorithms, and stiffness settings, or even tweak Optic Formula I to their shooting style on the fly.
  • Although there is still uncertainty, it might be about time the lens had Real-Time Lens Analysis, an integrated sensor that provides live MTF charting, CA detection, and vignetting analysis via your smartphone, taking quality control to new heights.

As far as the price is concerned, well I wouldn’t be too optimistic about it considering the level of quality and aperture size you will be getting but then again, nothing is set in stone, however, as per our expert’s estimate a lofty $1000-1500 price tag considering its groundbreaking tech and L-series pedigree, however, it is yet to confirm so I would expect fans to strap in and hold on tight for price tag slashes that could be seen along the way.

It goes without saying that at this point, clearly there are more questions poking around in everyone’s mind nowadays with only a few answers at this point. But one thing is for certain, with its intense combination of speed, sharpness, and innovation, 2024 is going to be a huge time for Canon but there is hoping it gets right on time. Stay tuned as we continue digging for more details on Canon’s most exciting lens project yet. The next frontier of photography starts here, my beloved readers.
