After years of waiting, the Sony Cinema Camera lineup might be at the brink of a possible firmware update which has enthralled quite a number of fans across all social media platforms. It seems like after all these years, Sony has kept their ear on the ground for all the possible feedback that their consumer base has generated, giving us in return what we always wanted in a complete package.

This firmware update includes some fundamental changes that comprise cameras designed solely for cinematography and commercial photoshoots such as FX3, FX6, and the infamous FX30, that’s right, it indeed looks like cinematographers might be getting what they deserve and it goes without saying that some of these comments on one of the infamous Youtube video even claimed something like this,

So many of us have been asking for things like shutter control on the FX3 and FX30 to help us better match shots, so I’m thrilled they were able to implement that.”

Despite the firmware update being set to be rolled in the mid 2024, fans at r/Sony were still eager to look forward as it seems to fix tons of issues and roll in newer features which include:

  • First of all, the highly-anticipated FX6 firmware update 5.0 is set to tons of such as anamorphic support, improved LUT processing for color accuracy, and expanded lens profile options.
  • On the other hand, cameras like FX3 and FX30 aren’t left out either, in fact, they may also receive massive changes along the line such as the inclusion of shutter speed tweaks or shutter angle will make a big difference in creative flexibility, making them quite the ideal pick for everyday commercial use.
  • Obviously, Sony will be rolling out these features in a complementary fashion as a sign gesture that implies that they were actually listening to their fans all along.
  • A new monitoring tool is implemented that includes waveform, it’s crazy that such a basic monitoring tool wasn’t there already. It’s going to make a big difference checking exposure and depth of field on set.”
  • Furthermore, in the new update, 1.5x de-squeeze for anamorphic lenses will also be seen for the FX6 5.0 update.
  • For cameras like FX6, users are expected to look forward to the improved 3D LUT processing for even more accurate and film-like color grading straight out of the camera, this will save us quite a lot of headaches during the Post-processing editing phase.
  • Autofocus improvements are something every camera enthusiast looks forward to, hopefuly, this update will emphasize on these cinema-centric cameras, making them cater for run-and-gun commercial shoots all while ensuring the tracking algorithm is perfected for both outdoor and documentary videography.
  • For live streaming, the inclusion of  SRT was something everyone wanted as it ensured a layer of reliability is integrated for professional photoshoots. In other words, sports videography and corporate event shoots could massively benefit from SRT protocols.

Speaking of which, “Sports photographers on Twitter I’ve spoken to lately after hearing about this news are undoubtedly thrilled and cannot wait to upgrade their cameras to squeeze the most out of it and I am not blaming them because we also believe this would send a compressed HD feeds directly from the camera over unmanaged networks.”

Nevertheless, With new features addressing many user pain points of cinema-oriented cameras like Fx3, Fx6, and Fx30, it seems these firmware launches will give a welcome boost of creativity and productivity to moviemakers around the world. As always, stay tuned for more articles like these, and make sure you bookmark it because we will be keeping tabs on these topics as only time will tell what other features may still be in store!
